How to Care for Your Differential.
Differential oil is one of the most-overlooked automobile maintenance tasks. Because the differential is at the rear and under the car, it gets none of the treatment that the engine does.
Luckily for you, differentials are in most cases pretty dependable. However, proper maintenance is the key to a long lasting differential. You won’t be getting very far for very long if lubrication in the differential fails. As a result, you will likely be looking at a differential repair.
Fortunately, you only need to change this oil every 30,000 to 60,000 miles (as always, check your owner’s manual).Give us a call and we will be happy to find the answers to your differential questions if your manual is not available.
Warning Signs of a Failed Differential
Modern cars are now made with computerized differentials. As sophisticated as these modern differentials can be, however, errors can make operation considerably less smooth.
In today’s automobile, a check engine light is often one of the first telltale signs that your car is having trouble. You might also notice some strange sounds or vibrations when something goes awry with your vehicle’s differential. In other situations, your differential might vibrate gears in unpredictable ways, resulting in uneven speeds and inconsistencies while driving.
A bad differential can sound in different ways.
For example, you may experience a whine to a rumble, or loud clanks when going from sitting still to moving. Another sure sign it’s differential is if the symptoms get worse when coasting compared with when accelerating. The noise generally comes from the rear, but it can be hard to locate for sure depending on the volume level.
While some of these problems might seem negligible in the moment, ignoring such issues could make the situation worse, decreasing the life of your differential over time and increasing the costs of differential repair.
The major internal components of a differential includes a case, ring & pinion gear, spider gears, side gears a carrier and axles.
First, there are bearings and caps. Bearings and caps tightly hold the various gears & carrier in place in the differential case. These gears, including the side gears and spider gears, are positioned inside the differential carrier and are attached to the axles.
In addition to side gears and spiders gears, the differential includes ring and pinion gears. The ring gear is attached to the outside of the carrier and the pinion gear is positioned in the differential housing and is supported by bearings. Both the ring and pinion gear have teeth, which are precisely machined to allow the gears to mate each other smoothly.
The ring and pinion gears along with the carrier inside your differential case are what allow your auto to have two rear wheels. Similarly to manual transmissions, ring and pinion gears tooth counts determine gear ratio.
